The Institute of Turkish Studies (ITS) is a non-profit, private educational institution devoted solely to the advancement of training, research, and teaching in the field of Ottoman and modern Turkish Studies.  ITS was established in 1983 and is currently located at the School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University in Washington, DC.  The Institute is governed by a twelve-member Board of Governors whose members include prominent academic specialists in Ottoman and modern Turkish Studies, former State Department officials and US Ambassadors to Turkey, and distinguished individuals from the corporate world.

ELIGIBILITY:

These grants are for summer travel to Turkey for language study in preparation for graduate research.

To be eligible for a Summer Language Study Grant applicants must be:

       *  U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of the application,
       *  Currently enrolled in a university in the United States.

TENURE AND TERMS OF GRANTS:

The time period for these grants varies with each individual application.  Normally, the recipients of the Summer Language Study Grants are expected to spend a minimum of two months in Turkey at an established Ottoman or Turkish language training facility.  Stipends generally range from $1,000 to $2,000.

REVIEW PROCESS:

All grant applications are reviewed by expert panels drawn from the Institute's Associates who are prominent scholars working in the field of Turkish Studies.  The Institute's Board of Governors makes the final decisions on awards upon the recommendations of the academic expert panelists.  Decisions on applications will be announced in May 2007.  ITS cannot provide reviewers' comments or any other information about proposals which do not receive funding.
